Le Puy-en-Velay / Vic-sur-Cère - 208km
(Do not hesitate to contact us if you wish to arrive the day before)
Departure from Le Puy-en-Velay towards Margeride massif, the territory of the Beast of Gévaudan.
Located between Cantal, Haute-Loire and Lozère, this granite land with rounded reliefs is mysterious and holds many secrets.
Your route meanders through meadows, moors, forests and rivers. En route, you will come across one of Gustave Eiffel's constructions: the majestic Garabit viaduct, 564 meters long and 122 meters high.
Your next stop is at the town of St Flour. It’s worth a stroll through the historical center of town to discover the wonders of this Cluniac city.
It won’t be long before you get to the Truyère and its gorges with, erected on its steep rocky peak, the enchanting site of the feudal castle of Alleuze.
Finally, you will reach Vic-sur-Cère via the Nordic area of Plomb du Cantal - Carladès.
Vic-sur-Cère / Vic-sur-Cère - 212km
During this circuit, you will discover the South of Cantal. Starting with a detour to visit the Messilhac Castle which is a jewel of French Renaissance Architecture, you will follow it up with a journey through the landscapes of the Truyère to Entraygues-sur-Truyère.
After a detour to admire the Messilhac castle, a jewel of French Renaissance architecture, this getaway will take you through the landscapes of the Truyère to Entraygues-sur-Truyère.
At the whim of the bends along the Lot river (which serves as the border between the departments of Cantal and Aveyron), you will begin a long ascent to the town of Maurs. A true delight for the eyes. The half-timbered houses and red roofs of this medieval town contrast with the greenery of the Cantal countryside. This day will end along the roads closest to the water reservoir of St Etienne Cantalès, (the largest artificial lake in the Auvergne) before returning to Vic-sur-Cère.
Vic-sur-Cère / Mauriac - 177km
Only 33 kilometers separate these two cities. However, you will cover 177km !
This road trip is aptly named : the Detours of Cantal.
The Sédaiges castle, a true flagship of the Cantal neo-Gothic architecture will be the first milestone of this trip. Nature will then take over with the Plomb du Cantal, the Serre pass, the Puy Mary, the Pas de Peyrol and the spectacular Cirque du Falgoux, to lead you to the village of Salers, a little medieval gem !
Passing the St Georges pass, you will come face to face with the imposing Anjony medieval castle. The circuit then moves away to the west on the side of St-Martin-Cantalès and you discover a different Cantal, far from the major tourist axes mentioned above.
Finally, in the last kilometers, it is a grandiose panorama that awaits you at the La Vigne Castle, a Merovingian castrum, then a medieval fortress, rebuilt in the 15th century by the Scorailles Lords.
Mauriac / Condat - 179km
You leave the capital of North Cantal and its high basalt plateaus to discover all the facets of the Auvergne landscapes.
For example: the Mars valley, the Falgoux valley, the Rhue valley, the Lastouilles and then Crégut lakes, and finally, the Plateau de l'Artense.
This ride will end at Le Mont-Dore with a detour to the Val castle, a small Corrézienne enclave in Cantal.
As you can see, this day still gives pride of place to the scenery.
Condat / Le Puy-en-Velay - 200km
In less than 9km, you will cross the Cézallier.
From basins to hills shaped by Quaternary glaciers, it is another facet of the Auvergne landscapes that you will discover as far as the city of St Flour. It is through the latter that you will leave Cantal for good.
Your gateway to the Haute-Loire is through the medieval village of Blesle in which there is a church without a bell tower and a bell tower without a church.
A crazy descent then begins on the side of St Just near Brioude to reach the Gorges de l'Allier which you will follow to the village of Prades.
The ascent of the Peyra Taillade pass with its (occasionally) 14% slope, the St Vidal castle then the castle of Polignac will conclude this roadtrip.
Your road trip is over. It’s time to say goodbye after a last breakfast together.
A guided tour of Puy-en-Velay as well as access to the Saint-Michel d'Aiguilhe rock and to the Virgin are possible if you would like to spend more time looking round.
